NATURE

Bulgaria simply resembles a continent in miniature because of its highly varied relief and miraculous works of nature where measure is paramount. Bulgaria occupies a relatively small area - 111 000 sq. km, but is nevertheless distinguished by wonderful nature - a beautiful, wide outlet on the Black Sea and the river Danube, with a long coastal strip and warm, sunny, sandy beaches, 16 breathtaking mountains , lovely valleys and high plateaus, 600 curative mineral springs, dozens of unique natural phenomena and 2000 deep chilly caves, a healthy climate with four mild seasons and diverse flora and fauna. Everything coexists in harmony.

In some regions spring comes in the end of February, but in the mountains there is snow even in May. The predominant climate in Bulgaria is moderate and transitional continental, but in different regions of Bulgaria there is Mediterranean and Black sea influence.
Along the south plain, close to the Mediterranean sea,in April it is summer already, but along the Black sea coast, the first days of May can be considered as the beginning of summer.

The autumn begins in September and in the mountain leaf falls begin, the first snow is in October. But along the seaside - there are flowers during October and November.
In the plains and a especially along the seaside - "winter" from December to February is relatively phenomenon (-5...+15 C), but in the high mountain - snow is deep to 2-3 meters and medium temperatures "under zero" are from November to April.

As a whole the vegetation can be ranked among the Central European forest region, but the influence of the South Russian and Asia Minor regions is also felt. Bulgaria has many regions which have preserved in their natural state unique natural nooks, with remarkable bio-diversity.

Contemporary natural vegetation demonstrates considerable ecological diversity. 12,360 species have been found in its composition, of which 3,700 are higher plants. The Bulgarian endemic plants, which are to be found nowhere else in the world, number more than 250: Edelweiss, Rila primrose, Balkan violet, Bulgarian blackberry, Rhodopean tulip etc. Forests abound with wild fruits, briars, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, mushrooms – all of them of proven flavour and of qualities that strengthen the body. There is also a great diversity of herbs and healing plants.
Bulgaria is famous for its oleaginous rose which blooms in the Valley of Roses. The Bulgarian tobacco brands are world - famous.

The Bulgarian fauna is no less interesting, with almost 13 000 animal species and subspecies, or about 14 percent of all European species. Rare mammal species are to be found in this country. Pelicans, stags, deer, does, wild goats, quails, pheasants etc. inhabit reserves and hunting grounds.
Fishing is possible in lakes, dams, mountain brooks and sea, hunting - in special hunting grounds.

Three national parks – Rila, Pirin, and the Central Balkan - have been set up (with a total area of 221,252.2 hectares), 9 natural parks (over 180,000 hectares), reserves, as well as 2,234 protected territories and natural landmarks. Two of them, Pirin National Park and Sreburna biosphere reserve have been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Together with 16 further biosphere reserves they offer wonderful conditions for photo-hunting, scientific-and-cognitive tourism and hobby tourism.
